Dogs Can Detect Early Signs Of Diabetes

Experts have proved for the first time that dogs trained to respond to their owner’s low blood sugar levels can save them from a potentially fatal – hypoglycaemic attack, the Daily Express reported. The animals use their acute sense of smell to detect changes in the chemical comp-osition of their owner’s sweat or breath. They can be taught to raise the alarm by barking, pawing or even fetching a blood testing kit. All people with Type 1 diabetes and those with Type 2 diabetes who are on glucose lowering medication, including insulin, need to regularly check their blood glucose. If they take too much insulin it can result in hypoglycaemia – or a hypo – caused by abnormally low levels of sugar in the blood. Symptoms include hunger , trembling or shakiness, and sweating. In more serious cases it can affect concentration or cause slurred speech.

4 Factors Predict Diabetes Remission After Surgery: Study

Scoring system could help determine if weight

The authors of an accompanying commentary agreed. “The DiaRem score could help with selection of appropriate treatment and management of expectations held by both the patient and the multidisciplinary team involved in the patient’s care,” wrote Dimitri Pournaras and Carel le Roux, from Imperial College London, in England. “Additionally, it could scientifically improve the comparison of different surgical procedures by allowing appropriate stratification of probability of remission,” Pournaras and le Roux said. “However, further prospective studies are needed to validate these potential uses,” they said.

Approved cancer drug potentially could help treat diabetes, researchers find

Treatment of normal and diabetic laboratory mice with a variety of VEGF inhibitors, including aflibercept, causes regression of blood vessels and increases the number of hypoxic cells in the liver. As a result, HIF-2alpha levels increase, IRS2 expression rises and the animals become better able to tolerate increases in blood-glucose levels. The researchers found that deletion of HIF-2alpha blocked the effect of the VEGF inhibitors, while liver-specific induction of HIF-2alpha expression also significantly improved the animals glucose tolerance. Much work remains to translate these mouse studies to human patients, but it will be interesting to explore VEGF inhibitors or drugs that can stabilize HIF-2alpha, such as prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors, for diabetes treatment, possibly in combination with pre-existing therapies to minimize toxicities, Kuo said. Taniguchi, in Giaccias lab, focused on the biology of HIF-2alpha.

Nutrition Q&A: Getting fiber from whole grains

You can expect to spend $241,080 over the next 17 years raising your precious bundle of joy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates in the annual report Expenditures on Children by Families. Thats up 2.6 percent from 2011, so yes, it is getting more expensive to have kids. One of the major expenses for children is food, USDA experts say. No one knows that better than Dr. Stan Cohen, a well-known pediatric gastroenterologist at Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta and author of What to Feed Your Baby: Cost-Conscious Nutrition for Your Infant, (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc., $17.95) . Cohen offers more than 30 years of experience as advice designed to help new parents give their babies a healthy start in the least expensive way. During a recent interview at his office, Cohen says one of the biggest problems is mothers are not breastfeeding enough.

Save money with cost-conscious infant nutrition

According to the Whole Grains Council, the average American eats less than one serving of whole grains a day. Over 40 percent of Americans never eat any whole grains. Surprising? Not with all the bread, baked goods and pizza dough made with refined flour that we eat.

One A Day® Women’s, Feeding America® and Sheryl Crow Celebrate Heroes on a “Nutrition Mission” to Fight Hunger in Local Communities

“We’ve seen remarkable participation by consumers in the Nutrition Mission for a second year, which has resulted in 2 million meals** a year being donated, and we’re proud to today announce these grant winners.” “Our nationwide network of food banks helps feed more than 37 million people in America annually. We’re thankful for the generous donation by the makers of One A Day Women’s and for all of the wonderful volunteers who give their time and energy to help nourish their neighbors in need,” says Leah Ray, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships, Feeding America. “We also congratulate these four volunteers, who not only won Nutrition Mission grants for their local food banks but also show true dedication in the fight against hunger.” More about the Nutrition Mission Grants Competition & the Winners The One A Day Women’s Nutrition Mission grants competition kicked off in April with the goal of celebrating and honoring the work of the volunteers by awarding a total of $100,000 to four local food banks who were nominated by their volunteers. The entries, particularly those of the four Nutrition Mission grant winners, selected from among hundreds of entries, prove that there are many ways to help neighbors in need: After winning volunteer Jeane Larkins, from Denver, CO, realized the number of children going to school hungry on Monday mornings, she saw a need for change to help the one in seven food insecure households in Colorado.[1] Starting with a delivery of 600 “PowerSacks” with enough food to feed a family of four for an entire weekend, in March 2012, Jeane has helped to grow the program significantly. In just 16 months, she has worked with Food Bank of the Rockies and local organization, Food For Thought, a project of the Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club in collaboration with Metropolitan State University of Denver, to deliver nearly 30,000 “PowerSacks” with zero overhead expenses. When Peg Molina from New Milford, CT started her Nutrition Mission working with Connecticut Food Bank’s food-assistance partner New Milford Food Bank, it was helping 30-40 households per week.

Snoring Affects Eyesight, Evidence Suggests

Best Snoring Aids Review for Adults Published at CherryNews.com

More precisely, it appears that, the louder a person snores, the more likely they are to end up suffering from poor vision. And no, this doesn’t happen because they get punched in the face by their loved one more often than non-snorers are. The scientists theorize that, in the case of people suffering with sleep apnea, it often happens that the collapsing of the tissue of the throat muscles is accompanied by a reduced flow of oxygen to the eyes. They say that this is probably the reason why sleep apnea sufferers are 1.67 times more likely to develop glaucoma than people not diagnosed with this condition are, sources say.

In defence of boring snoring MPs

My younger son caught a cold last week, which he promptly passed to the rest of the family. Thankfully, it was a short-lived one, with a day of sore throat and a couple of days of congestion, but I didn’t sleep well Tuesday night, and perhaps I did snore a bit that night. My wife says she tries gentle ways to prod me out of my snoring. She first will poke and prod, attempting to reposition me without waking me up. If that doesn’t work, then she will wake me and tell me I’m snoring.

Researchers say sleep apnea sufferers are 1.67 times more likely to develop glaucoma

Doctors are doing everything they can to encourage those struggling with sleep apnea to use the machines. Researchers studied before-and-after shots of 20 patients over the course of CPAC treatment. They found the results went far beyond just “looking sleepy.” Person using the CPAC machine. The team first got the idea for the study when they noticed patients who were prescribed the treatment often looked significantly better shortly after they started the CPAC regimen. “Patients looked more alert, more youthful and more attractive after treatment. Their foreheads were less puffy, and their faces were less red, too – and their forehead wrinkles may have been reduced,” the press release reported. The researchers hope to inspire people to continue using the machines, or begin using them, by showing them it will improve not only their physical health, but appearance as well. “We want sleep to be on people’s minds, and to educate them about the importance of getting enough sleep and getting attention for sleep disorders,” head of U-M’s sleep team, Ronald Chervin, said.

Snoring Makes You Less Attractive In Daily Life, A Machine Could Help (PHOTO)

I stress that I mean boring snoring not in an offensive sense, but simply to denote that they are not people obsessed with being “flamboyant personalities” addicted to boosting their own profile. An image of the Lib Dem Lembit Opik has just flashed into my brain for some reason. And Cyril Smith was a “personality” I particularly could not abide. The British used to have a terrible weakness for flamboyant MPs. Figures such as Jeremy Thorpe and the Tory moustache-wearer Gerald Nabarro MP were major media stars in their day.

Snoring: A New Tip-Off To Stroke and Heart Disease

A sleep study determines if the person has sleep apnea, or just snores without the medical condition, and can determine how a doctor might treat the person. The patient might need to use a CPAP device when he or she sleeps, or a bi-level positive airway pressure mask, Bader said. Every day people tell me I cant do it. I wont use it, Bader said of the CPAP device. But, there are 20 different face masks on the market. They range from the traditionally thought of full face mask to less claustrophobic devices such as a nose mask, nasal pillows with little tubes that run up the nostrils and hook around the ears, to a hybrid mask that incorporates a plate that slides into ones mouth like a bite block, Bader explained. There also are surgical options, he added, such as tonsillectomies.

Snoring: When is it cause for concern?

New research conducted by otolaryngologists at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroitfinds that snoring is a bigger risk factor for stroke and heart attack than smoking, being overweight, or high cholesterol. According to research by Robert Deeb, MD and Karen Yaremchuk, MD, snoring can reveal damage to the carotid arteries the arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain. The study which has been submitted to the journal The Laryngoscope, will be presentedin Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday at the 2013 Combined Sections Meeting of the Triological Society . The researchers looked at the carotid arteries in snorers and found increased thickening of the artery walls, indicating damage already setting in. The researchers suggested that the damage could be due to the trauma and inflammation caused by the vibrations of snoring. However, previous research on the connection between sleep apnea and artery disease has found a reverse connection the arterial damage comes first, lowering the amount of oxygen in the blood, leading to breathing interruptions.
